Bitwise will close and liquidate the Bitwise Dogecoin ETF (NYSE Arca: BWOW) in October 2026. The expected final trading day is Wednesday, October 14. Investors still holding shares through the liquidation are scheduled to receive cash on or around October 22, rather than Dogecoin.
The operational details matter more than the headline. Bitwise’s September 10 Form 8-K says secondary-market trading will halt before the market opens on October 15. From that point, there will be no NYSE Arca market in which shareholders can sell BWOW shares.
BWOW liquidation dates shareholders should know
| Date | What happens | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| September 10, 2026 | Bitwise announces the voluntary closure, delisting and liquidation. | The decision is official and was filed with the SEC. |
| October 14, 2026 | Expected last day to trade BWOW on NYSE Arca. | Shareholders who want to choose their sale timing must act through their broker before the close. |
| Before market open, October 15 | New share creation stops and secondary-market trading is halted. | There will no longer be a public market for BWOW shares. |
| October 21 | Bitwise says the cash payment will be based on the fund’s net asset value on this date. | This is the valuation reference for holders who remain in the fund. |
| On or around October 22 | Remaining shares are automatically redeemed and cash is deposited through brokerage accounts. | No shareholder action is required for the automatic distribution. |

Sell before the halt or wait for cash?
There are two different paths, and neither produces a distribution of DOGE. A shareholder may sell BWOW in the secondary market through the close on October 14, subject to the market price, bid-ask spread and any brokerage charges. Someone who remains invested will have the shares automatically redeemed for cash at liquidation.
The SEC filing adds an important caveat: once portfolio liquidation starts, BWOW will no longer be managed according to its investment objective. In plain English, the fund may stop tracking Dogecoin as it converts its holdings to cash. Investors who wait should not assume their final proceeds will mirror DOGE’s price through the distribution date.
Bitwise says shareholders do not need to take action to receive the automatic cash payment. But account-specific timing can depend on the broker or other financial intermediary. The filing also says the cash distribution is a taxable event and tells investors to consult a tax adviser about their circumstances.
A very small fund is leaving a much larger product shelf
BWOW was young and small. The trust began operations on November 25, 2025, and its shares started trading the next day, according to its SEC quarterly report. The planned October 22 liquidation therefore comes less than a year after inception.
On September 8, 2026, the official BWOW page reported $721,815 in net assets, 50,000 shares outstanding and about 8.20 million DOGE in the trust. Bitwise did not say that low assets caused the closure. Its stated reason was that the manager was optimizing its product range for evolving investor needs.
Still, the scale provides context. A sub-$1 million product has little room to absorb fixed listing, administration, custody and compliance costs. That is an inference from the fund’s size—not a reason confirmed by Bitwise—and it shows why approval and launch do not guarantee that a crypto product will remain open.
What the closure does—and does not—mean
The closure removes one U.S.-listed wrapper for Dogecoin exposure. It is not an SEC enforcement action, it does not alter the Dogecoin network, and it does not require holders of DOGE itself to do anything. The decision applies to BWOW shares.
BWOW is commonly described as an ETF and uses that term in its name, but Bitwise’s disclosures say it is an exchange-traded product that is not registered as an investment company under the Investment Company Act of 1940. Its sole asset is Dogecoin, and the value of each share is intended to reflect DOGE held by the trust, less expenses and liabilities.
The episode also shows that institutional crypto access is not moving in one straight line. New wrappers and trading links continue to appear even while individual products disappear. That push and pull is part of the same market-infrastructure story behind Nasdaq’s proposed investment in Payward, Kraken’s parent: traditional-market distribution is expanding, but each product still has to justify its place on the shelf.
