Coinbase Derivatives has filed to double the aggregate position limit covering its nano XRP and XRP futures, proposing a change from 35,000 to 70,000 aggregate-equivalent contracts. The exchange states an October 28, 2026 effective date, but the filing was still under CFTC review when checked on October 16.

The October 14 self-certification would amend Rule 533. It is an exchange-filed rule change, rather than a CFTC approval of the higher limit. The CFTC docket showed “10 Day Review” as of October 16 at 9:08 a.m. Korea Standard Time, or 12:08 a.m. UTC.

What the proposed limit measures

The filing’s table combines the two futures products through an aggregation ratio. It lists a 500-XRP contract size for nano XRP futures and a 20-to-1 ratio with XRP futures. The proposed 70,000 figure therefore describes the aggregate limit under that framework; it is not a count of XRP tokens or a forecast of positions traders will hold.

The immediate change concerns the exchange’s derivatives position-limit rule. It does not establish a new federal XRP position-limit rule or decide the treatment of XRP in the spot market.

Why October 28 remains conditional

Under the CFTC’s general rule-filing process, a certified rule change ordinarily takes effect on the registered entity’s certified date after a 10-business-day review period, unless the Commission extends its review. The Commission can stay a filing for up to 90 calendar days where the applicable grounds are met. A stayed rule receives a public-comment period and may face an objection.

October 28 is consequently the date Coinbase Derivatives has specified, subject to the applicable certification and notice steps and the absence of a CFTC stay or objection. The reviewed documents do not establish that the higher limit has taken effect.

A larger cap does not establish greater demand

Coinbase Derivatives says in its filing that it is “not aware of any substantive opposing views.” That is the exchange’s representation, rather than an independent assessment of market participants’ views.

The evidence leaves the commercial rationale and likely use of the proposed capacity unresolved. It provides no basis to conclude that customer demand, open interest, liquidity or trading volume has increased, or that XRP’s price will respond. A higher permitted limit and actual trading activity are separate questions.

The next material developments would be a change in the docket’s status, a stay or objection, a revised filing, or an updated exchange rulebook establishing the operative limit. Until then, the documented development is the proposed increase and its pending review.
